I am very sorry to inform you all that The CROSSHAIRS for CHRIST’s 5th Annual Dove Hunt has been cancelled. Our favorite hunt spot, on the East bank of the Rio Puerco just west of Rio Rancho is on private property and in years past has been part of the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Open Gate hunter access program. This year the land owner failed to sign the contract and has fallen out of the program. Over the past week I have tried relentlessly to contact the owner and acquire permission for us to hunt on opening day. I was unsuccessful.

Perhaps this is the year we all break out across the region and seek new locations. I want to encourage you to go hunt, even if you need to drive further south towards Socorro or East toward Santa Rosa. Dove populations have been strong this year and you may find a new location for the group to try next year, should we fail at contacting the land owner again.

I am sorry for the disappointing announcement, but hope to see you for duck season, as we have multiple public access locations for those hunts.
